German carrier Lufthansa is to give one million Miles and More miles to the person who comes up with the best nickname for its Airbus A380 aircraft, due to go into service later this year.

The airline has now painted its first two A380 superjumbos in Lufthansa liveries (see pictures below), officially naming them Frankfurt Am Main and Munchen. But the carrier is looking for a “catchy nickname” for its A380 aircraft in general, and is giving away one million frequent flyer miles to the winning suggestion.

“When the Boeing 747 entered into service at the end of the 1960’s, it was quickly named the Jumbo Jet,” says the carrier on its dedicated website at lufthansa.com/a380. “Leave your mark on the future history of aviation by suggesting a unique name for the LH A380, the world’s biggest and most modern passenger jet. The winner faces the glittering prospect of an entry in the history books, and a staggering 1,000,000 Miles and More miles – enough to fly around the world twice in first class, for example!”

The exact delivery dates and first flight of Lufthansa’s A380 have not yet been officially released, although German aviation website aero.de recently reported that the first aircraft would be delivered on May 10, before operating crew training flights over a three-week period, and then transporting the German football team between Frankfurt and Johannesburg on June 6 for its first international flight.

The first scheduled route has also not yet been confirmed, but rumours persist that it will be Frankfurt-New York JFK. For now Lufthansa says that the superjumbo will operate “mainly on routes to Asia and North America”.

maybe they could use the qantas nickaname - the 180 (as it keeps returning due to technical problems!)

JamesKelly - 11/02/2010 11:32

I think they should be called "Far and Wide". Well they fly far and they're wide!

I have tried without sucsess to enter this competition - has anyone managed to do so?

Chanukya - 16/02/2010 20:26

I tried entering the contest. I don't know what to enter for the picture code? I tried copying a A380 picture gave it a name and number and still doesn't work? This is a smart way to scam everyone!

My name for it will be 'beautiful phoenix - schöne phoenix'

tareqnafi - 19/02/2010 12:11

entered the A-380 contest, decided on name of A-380 = Dynasoar Dyna = a. Poweful, b. Dramatic . Soar = a. To fly at great heights. b. To rise increase dramatically. c. To ascend to a higher more exhaulted level. d. To rise to majestic stature. We are talking about a big powerful aircraft with superior performance....but we must address the size of the big bird, and that is why we came up with the name DYNASOAR...relates to the big impressive powerful dinosaurs. Joe called me thoe other day, telling me he would be flying the Lufthansa Dynasoar, next week. Wow, easy to identify this big aircraft with a name like that.

I think it has to be a "bus" because it's a vehicle of mass transport, and "bus" reads well and is understood in many languages. Something like GloBus (for global bus) or e-bus (for earth-bus) or superbus.

Die Zauberluft.

It plays with the Magic Flute of Mozart (Die Zauberflöte) and the name of Lufthansa. Luft means air, so it sounds like "The Air of Magic" or "The Magic Air" This could be a perfect name! I posted it on the website! You like it? Go and vote for it!

When you look at the photos/films of the big A380, the message is loud and clear. Dynasoaring = SUPERIORITY, POWERFUL, IMPRESSIVE, MAJESTIC. So the message I get when I look at these impressive photos/films of the big A 380 performing is....Dynasoaring Technology - Dynasoaring Intellect - Dynasoaring Performance - Dynasoaring Superiority - Dynasoaring Superior Aerodynamics. It is obvious that passenger comfort, safety and needs is all superiority accommodated aboard the big majestic dynamic A 380. So, let's go dynasoaring on the Lufthansa A 380 DYNASOAR

Spoonky...right on
