Lufthansa launches mobile boarding passes from LHR

Lufthansa is extending its mobile boarding pass initiative to include passengers flying from London Heathrow.

From this Monday (October 13), passengers will be able to request a 2D boarding pass to be sent directly to their phone via an email or SMS, which can then be scanned at security checkpoints. Along with the actual boarding pass (which can be requested during online check in on Lufthansa’s main website or its mobile portal), relevant flight data such as the passenger’s name, flight number and departure time will also be included.

Should the passenger be unable to display their boarding pass on arrival at the airport (for example if the mobile needs recharging), they will still be able to obtain a printed version as normal via self-service machines or at check-in counters.

This is the first time the service has been extended beyond flights departing from Germany. Lufthansa says that over 7,000 passengers per week are currently using its mobile boarding passes, and adds that the service will be gradually rolled out to additional UK and European departure points over the coming months.

Other carriers to launch mobile boarding pass schemes include Bmi (see online news June 1) and Air France (see online news September 4), although at present these are both on fairly limited routes.
