Lufthansa celebrates Rio launch with points giveaway
Published: 05/05/2011 - Filed under: News »
German carrier Lufthansa will resume flights to Rio de Janeiro from October, and to celebrate has launched a facebook game offering participants the chance to win 30,000 Miles and More miles.
Lufthansa last served Rio de Janeiro in 2005, but will join the growing list of airlines launching or increasing flights to the city, with a five-times weekly service from Frankfurt starting on October 30.
Flights will be served with three-class A340-300 aircraft, and will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, departing Frankfurt at 1015 and landing in Rio at 1945. The return leg will leave Brazil at 2315, arriving back in Germany at 1420 the next day. The route will complement Lufthansa’s existing services from Munich and Frankfurt to Sao Paulo.
Several carriers have announced new routes and increased frequencies to Rio de Janeiro in recent months, as Brazil gears up to host the 2014 World Cup, and Rio the 2016 Olympic Games.
Emirates will fly to Buenos Aires via Rio from January 3, 2012 (see online news April 6), while BA is to double frequencies between London and Rio from the end of October (see online news April 19), and TAM is also set to double its London-Rio frequencies from August 1, as well as increasing flights to Frankfurt and New York (see online news April 12).
To celebrate the resumption of flights to Rio Lufthansa is offering the chance to win one of three prizes of 30,000 Miles and More miles through its Facebook “App around the world - Destination: Rio” promotion. Participants answer questions related to Rio de Janeiro and flying in general – for more information visit facebook.com/Lufthansa.

The report by Mark Caswell is incorrect; as per ONLINE NEWS 12 April, the Emirates flight is Dubai>Buenos Aires, VIA Rio de Janeiro, not the opposite.
