Langham Hospitality Group is to open a 320-room property in Chicago in 2013, housed within the city’s iconic Mies van der Rohe-designed skyscraper, known to locals as the IBM building.

The 52-storey structure was the last building to be designed by the German architect, and is located at 330 North Wabash Avenue overlooking Chicago River. Opened in 1973, the building was official recognised as a Chicago Landmark in 2008, and has also on the National Register of Historic Places.

Rooms will start from 49sqm, and will feature views of Lake Michigan and Chicago River, as will the hotel’s Palm Court restaurant (after the group’s original Palm Court at the Langham London which has served afternoon tea since 1865).

There will also be a full service restaurant and summer time alfresco option, along with around 1,900sqm of meeting space, and an 840sqm Chuan Spa – for more information on the spa concept see Hotelier of the Week: Barry White on our sister website ABTN.

The Chicago property will add to two existing Langham hotels in the US – the Langham, Boston, and the Langham, Huntington Hotel in Pasadena. The group currently has 13 properties across the US, China, Thailand, India and the UK, with plans to expand to up to 30 properties within the next three years, and 50 within the next five years.
