Helsinki airport has acquired its first upscale hotel, with the opening of the Hilton Helsinki-Vantaa Airport in the airport's international terminal.

The €40m hotel has 246 rooms and suites, 24 of which feature private saunas. Guest rooms – along with the rest of the hotel – are decorated in contemporary Finnish style, featuring furniture by acclaimed designer Alvar Aalto.

Meeting facilities at the hotel include a ballroom, a boardroom, five meeting rooms, a dedicated executive floor and lounge, and a 24-hour business centre. There are also arrival and departure screens on display in the hotel lobby, as well as airline self-service check-in kiosks available for flights operated by Finnair, Finncom Airlines and KLM, with other airlines soon to follow.

Other facilities include a 24-hour Hilton Fitness by Precor gym with Finnish-style saunas (the Precor fitness brand has been seen in Hilton hotels in the US for some time, and is soon to be rolled out across Europe), as well as a lounge bar and a 250-seat restaurant with a 'show kitchen' that guests can view from their tables. Broadband and wifi internet access are available throughout the hotel, including the guest rooms.

The Hilton Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (located around 20 minutes from central Helsinki) is the third Hilton to be introduced to the Finnish capital, the others being the Hilton Helsinki Strand and Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa. Hilton is currently expanding its Nordic portfolio, with the Hilton Reykjavik Nordica set to open in Iceland in September.

Wolfgang Neumann, President of Hilton Hotels Europe, said of the most recent opening: "As the only upscale hotel situated directly at the airport terminal, Hilton Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is a truly exciting and strategically important addition to our European portfolio. With almost 150 international flights departing from Helsinki airport each day – some 12 million passengers a year – our newest Hilton property is ideally located to cater to the growing number of business and leisure travellers who fly through, to and from Helsinki".

Standard guest room rates for the Hilton Helsinki-Vantaa Airport start at €117 (weekend stays) and €159 (weekday stays). These prices are valid until December 31 and include breakfast, tax and service charges.
