Hilton Vancouver gets Green Seal of approval

The Hilton Vancouver has become the first hotel to earn both Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Green Seal certifications.

The Green Seal accolade, an independent nonprofit organization providing science-based environmental certification, comes three years after the hotel achieved the LEED certification.

“This hotel has set a new standard for helping to minimize environmental impact while providing the very best in service and amenities to guests,” said Jeff Diskin, senior vice president, brand management - Hilton Hotels & Resorts.

Based on Green Seal criteria, the hotel implemented a Comprehensive Environmental Management Program which includes: elimination of hazardous substances, use of biodegradable cleaning products, waste water management, energy efficiency and conservation, waste minimization, reuse and recycling and an environmentally and socially sensitive purchasing policy.

The hotel also composts or donates excess food. Over the past 12 months, more than 200,000 pounds of compostable material and product, including food waste, has been diverted from landfills through the hotel’s efforts.

Europcar launches Green Charter

Europcar has announced the certification of its “Green Charter”, which formalizes its commitment to sustainable development. The Green Charter, certified by BureauVeritas, outlines the company’s commitments in four main areas:

  • a “green” fleet
  • schemes to collect and recycle materials, including waste, oil-based fluids, and the water used at all of its car wash facilities
  • internal processes
  • initiatives to raise awareness among customers.

“We have been offering ‘green’ cars for over 10 years and we play a pioneering role in our industry,” said Salvatore Catania, chief executive officer of Europcar Groupe. “As the European leader, we have decided to go even further by taking a systematic approach to sustainable development and by measuring the effectiveness of our initiatives.”
