Monarch recycling from Birmingham airport

Monarch Airlines has extended its onboard recycling scheme to include flights departing from Birmingham airport. The carrier originally introduced the policy on its Gatwick routes, and will now recycle all aluminium, plastic, glass and paper used during flights from the Midlands airport.

Tim Jeans, managing director of Monarch, pointed out that 70 per cent of waste generated in the cabin is recyclable. He said: “We are delighted that our ongoing work with Birmingham airport is enabling us to introduce the scheme on flights into the airport. However, we urge our other UK and European airports to introduce the necessary recycling infrastructure to enable us to roll out the scheme to include all Monarch services.”

Melbourne Convention Centre given green rating

The new Melbourne Convention Centre has been awarded a six-star environmental rating ahead of its opening next year. The award recognises the building as “setting new global standards for a convention centre”.

Part of a £622 million development project, which will include a Hilton hotel and 60,000 sqm of retail space, the convention centre has incorporated a number of environmentally friendly features including:

  • Natural light and lighting controls to cut down energy usage, as well as solar panels, which will deliver all public amenity hot-water requirements.
  • A black-water recycling plant, which will use wastewater to supply toilets and cooling towers, and to irrigate landscapes, reducing water consumption by 50 per cent compared with what would normally be used in a building of its size.

The Melbourne Convention Centre is located on South Wharf in central Melbourne, and will feature an 18 metre-high glass façade looking out onto the city’s Yarra River.
