There’s more bad news for European travellers to India, as Finnair announces it is to suspend its four-times weekly service between Helsinki and Mumbai from this May.
Earlier today businesstraveller.com revealed that Virgin Atlantic is to drop its flights between London and Mumbai (see online news March 9), and Finnair has joined the carrier by temporarily suspending its services to the Indian city between May and mid-October this year.
Finnair says the decision was made due to “unfavourable economic conditions affecting both passenger and cargo sales in India and Europe”, adding that there is currently overcapacity on Mumbai-Europe routes. Said Petteri Kostermaa, VP for Finnair's network strategies:
"The overcapacity has driven air fare levels radically down and cost level has not declined respectively. Market conditions for the entire summer period look bleak. Summer is clearly more difficult than winter season on the Mumbai route.”
Finnair says that its daily route between Helsinki and Delhi will be operated as planned during the summer period.
