Finnair mobile boarding passFinnair has introduced paperless mobile boarding passes for passengers flying out of Heathrow and Manchester airports.

The airline, keen to bolster its green credentials, said passengers can now choose to have boarding passes sent directly to their mobile phones rather than carry around a printed pass.

As with similar mobile boarding solutions launched by other airlines, a 2D barcode containing passenger information is scanned from the phone’s screen. The pass also contains information on baggage and links to further services.

A link is sent to the mobile phone by SMS. The boarding pass can then be downloaded to the phone via the mobile internet. Should any problems arise, Finnair has in place a backup system using traditional paper passes.

The pass should work on any mobile device and for all operators without the need for extra settings and will cost no more than the price of a normal text message, Finnair said.

Finnair is the latest airline to introduce mobile boarding passes at Heathrow – Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and Bmi all offer similar services at the UK hub airport.
