Etihad investigating 2013 data breach

8 Jan 2016 by Mark Caswell
Etihad Airways is investigating claims that the personal data of around 7,000 Etihad Guest members were leaked during a 2013 promotional campaign. The potential data breach came to light after an anonymous tip-off was sent to Dubai-based newspaper Gulf News. According to the report the leak included the names, email addresses and “other personal information” of around 7,000 Etihad Guest members worldwide, including those in the Middle East, United States and Europe. In a statement the carrier said that it “appears this information was misappropriated from a marketing vendor involved in a promotional campaign in 2013”, adding that “Etihad Airways is considering all its legal options as a matter of priority”. Etihad said that the leak “does not include sensitive or financial information, and presents no threat to the security of Etihad Guest member’s accounts”. The claims are the latest in a long line of potential data breaches across travel firms worldwide. In December Hyatt confirmed that the payments systems of 318 of its properties had been affected by malware, while in November Hilton urged customers to check their credit card statements after confirming the theft of cardholder payment details. Also in November the systems of 54 Starwood properties were infected with malware, resulting in the leaking of customer payment information including cardholder names, payment card number, security codes and expiration dates. And in March last year British Airways admitted that a small proportion of its Executive Club frequent flyer customers had had their accounts hacked, with members advised to change their passwords as a security measure. etihad.com
