Emirates launches Ahmedabad service

Middle Eastern carrier Emirates will start a six-times weekly service to Ahmedabad from October 28. The Dubai-based airline will serve India's sixth largest city with two aircraft types – a two-class Airbus A330-200 and a three-class Boeing 777-200.

The announcement means Emirates will beat rivals Qatar in launching flights to the city by a couple of months – the Doha-based carrier had been due to start flying into Ahmedabad from April this year (see online news January 4), but this launch didn't materialise. However Business Traveller understands Qatar will now start the service on December 12.

Emirates flight EK538 will depart from Dubai every day except Tuesday at 2255, arriving in Ahmedabad at 0310 the next day, with return flight EK539 leaving the Indian city at 0425 and arriving in Dubai at 0610.

The western Indian city of Ahmedabad is an important industrial centre, with many of its five million inhabitants involved in the textile industry. It is also the home of Sabarmati Ashram, the former residence of Mahatma Gandhi.
