Egyptair launches in-flight internet on London route

Egyptair has joined the early adopters of OnAir’s in-flight mobile and internet service, offering full wifi connectivity on new Airbus A330-300 aircraft serving the London route.

Oman Air was the first airline worldwide to launch the OnAir service earlier this year (see online news May 4), and Emirates will start to offer the Airbus / SITA-owned service in 2011 (see online news August 24).

Star Alliance member Egyptair is now operating the first of its new A330-300s equipped with the OnAir product on the London route, with further aircraft scheduled to be equipped in “coming months”.

It’s unclear from the OnAir press release what charge Egyptair will make for in-flight internet access (as this is set by the airline rather than the technology provider), but mobile phone charges are set according to the international roaming agreements with individual’s mobile phone contracts. Oman Air charges US$30 for full internet access using the OnAir service, US$10 for access to a web email account, or US$5 for access to an instant messaging service.

Oman Air and Egyptair are currently the only two airlines to offer OnAir’s full connectivity suite (ie: mobile calls and wifi internet), however the technology provider has announced future partnerships with carriers including Saudi Arabian Airlines, Emirates, Libyan Airlines and HK Airlines.
