Easyjet to launch London Southend services

16 Jun 2011 by BusinessTraveller

Easyjet is to open a base at London Southend airport from April 2012, with around 70 flights per week.

Exact details have yet to be revealed, but the carrier says it will serve around ten destinations including Barcelona, Faro and Ibiza, with tickets going on sale in July.

The airport is currently building a new terminal, with the facility scheduled to open this autumn. Earlier this year Aer Arann became the first Irish commercial airline to fly from London Southend to both Waterford and Galway (see online news February 2).

Located in Essex, the airport is hoping to encourage London-based travellers by offering direct rail services to London Liverpool Street from the dedicated Southend Airport station (due to open this summer).

The airport will also serve Stratford up to eight times per hour in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games, and says it can offer 15-minute plane-to-train connections. Services to both Liverpool Street and Stratford will take “well under an hour”.
