East Coast launches Edinburgh-London express link

23 May 2011 by BusinessTraveller

Rail operator East Coast has launched a new early morning “Flying Scotsman” service between Edinburgh and London, stopping only once at Newcastle and taking just four hours.

The new service is aimed at business travellers located in the Edinburgh catchment area, as it departs at 0540 and arrives at London’s Kings Cross at 0940 to allow a day’s work in the capital.

Commuters based in Newcastle will also be able to join for the service at 0703. A new 0600 service from Berwick (passing through Alnmouth and Morpeth, arriving in Newcastle at 0652) will allow passengers based in Northumberland to connect onto the Flying Scotsman, or stay on board and arrive directly in London slightly later at 1006.

To mark the new service East Coast has renamed locomotive 91101 as the “Flying Scotsman”, with the same branding originally used by London and North Eastern Railway in the 1920s.

The new express service form part of the new East Coast timetable which the operator says adds 19 more weekday services across its network, with  13 additional services on Saturday and nine on Sunday.  Among the additions include a new seven days per week service between London and Harrogate, and direct services between London’s King Cross and Lincoln.

The operator has also introduced a new food offering for first class passengers – for more information see online news April 15.
