Two of the three runways at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) will be partially recarpeted this summer, with possible disruption to flight schedules.
Currently all three runways can handle a combined 68 flight movements per hour. With just one runway and parts of the other two available, IGI will be able to handle 60 flight movements.
It’s been eight years since the re-carpeting last took place, and it is overdue.
An airport official was quoted as saying: “The main runway (28) is just over 3 km long. We have identified that 1.9 km of this needs to be recarpeted. We are not planning to recarpet the whole thing in a bid to avoid unnecessary expenditure.”
