Maltese hotel group Corinthia Hotels has confirmed it is developing a hotel and residences project within London’s iconic Metropole building, and the adjoining 10 Whitehall Place.

Corinthia acquired the properties from The Crown Estate last year, and has started refurbishment of both buildings, with completion slated for the end of 2010.

The project includes a 300-room luxury hotel within the Metropole building, with room sizes averaging 45sqm. The hotel will also feature two restaurants, a “destination bar”, a ballroom, and meeting facilities. Meanwhile 10 Whitehall Place will be redeveloped as a 2,500-sqm spa, operated by ESPA, as well as 12 residences starting from 250sqm.

The project will mark the debut of the Corinthia brand in the UK. The group, owned by International Hotel Investments (IHI) currently has hotels in Hungary, Portugal, Malta, Russia, Libya and the Czech Republic.

The Metropole building is located close to Trafalgar Square, and formerly housed the Metrpole Hotel, before being used by the Ministry of Defence.
