Founder Skyteam member Delta has announced China Eastern has signed a memorandum of understanding to join the alliance.
In a statement on Delta’s website the carrier’s chief executive Officer Richard Anderson said:
“China Eastern is an outstanding airline with a strong leadership team and a proud history of serving its customers. We are honoured that another leading global airline has chosen to link its future growth and success with Delta and our SkyTeam partners."
"China Eastern's extensive network and growing hub in Shanghai will complement Delta's existing service to China and improve our customers' access to destinations across one of the world's fastest-growing regions."
A statement released by Air France said that China Eastern and Skyteam are expected to sign an alliance agreement in June, with inauguration into the alliance in mid-2011.
The move means Skyteam will count two Chinese airlines within its fold, with China Southern having joined in 2007.
