Centralwings drops UK flights

Centralwings, the low-cost subsidiary of LOT Polish Airlines, is dropping all scheduled flights to and from the UK and Ireland from September 14, and will become a charter-only airline from the end of the month.

The carrier’s website confirms that its London-Warsaw, London-Krakow, Edinburgh-Gdansk, Edinburgh-Warsaw, Dublin-Gdansk and Dublin-Warsaw will all terminate on Sunday September 14, with all scheduled flights suspended from the end of September “until further notice”.

In an online statement, the president for the management board of Centralwings, Tomasz Szymczak said:

“In the [current] situation where the field of aviation in the whole world is affected by the general slowdown, we have decided to undertake steps which are supposed to improve the company’s profitability, which is the ultimate priority.”

Passengers travelling from London still have the option of flying with several carriers to Warsaw, including LOT (from Heathrow rather than Centralwing’s base at Gatwick), Easyjet (Luton), British Airways (Gatwick and London City) and Wizzair (Luton). London-Krakow options include Ryanair from Stansted, BA from Gatwick, and Easyjet from both Luton and Gatwick.

But it’s passengers based in Scotland who will lose out, as there are no alternative flights from Edinburgh to Gdansk or Warsaw. Ryanair serves Gdansk from Dublin, while both Ryanair and Aer Lingus ply the Dublin-Warsaw route.
