Lufthansa is to launch flights from London City (LCY) to Berlin's Tegel Airport, the first route to Germany's capital from the central London airport. The carrier will start flights between the cities on January 14, 2008.

Lufthansa previously served the route between the German and British capitals, with LCY-Tegel flights running from March 2001-March 2002. But the route has now been revived, with twice-daily flights from January, rising to thrice-daily from the start of the 2008 summer timetable. The route will be operated by Lufthansa's regional partner Eurowings, using a BAe 146-200 aircraft.

Flight timings will suit German-based business travellers flying to London on a day trip, with LH4838 leaving Berlin at 0830 (daily except Sun) and arriving in London at 0910, and the return leg LH4843 departing LCY at 1805, arriving in Tegel at 2050 (daily except Sat). For Berlin-bound passengers the second flight LH4839 leaves LCY at 0940 (daily except Sun), arriving in the German capital at 1225, with the return leg LH4842 departing Berlin at 1655 and arriving back in London at 1735 (daily except Sat).

Berlin is currently served by four other carriers from London – Easyjet from Luton and Gatwick to Berlin Schoenefeld, BA from Heathrow to Tegel, Air Berlin from Stansted to Tegel, and Ryanair from Stansted to Schoenefeld. Tegel airport is around five miles from the city centre, while Schoenefeld is further out at around 12 miles.

Fares for the new flights start at £79 return in economy, with business class flights from £729.
