BA woos loyal customers with triple miles over possible strike period

British Airways is offering loyal Executive Club members up to triple miles on selected flights taken between now and March 26, a period during which strike action could take place.

Certain members have been “specifically selected to receive this offer” (although others have received an email offering double miles), which is valid for First (fare codes F and A) and Club World (J, C and D) flights to destinations including Atlanta, LA, Washington, Abu Dhabi, Cape Town, Dubai, Johannesburg, Chennai and Hyderabad.

Selected members need to pre-register for the promotion, which does not include flights operated by franchisees, codeshare partners or Oneworld members.

By offering bonus miles in business and first class over the next month, it would appear BA is  trying to woo its most loyal customers who might otherwise be tempted to book with other carriers due to the uncertainity over possible strike action.

Members of the Unite union voted overwhelmingly for strike action in the latest ballot (see online news February 22), but the union is yet to announce any strike dates, saying that “meaningful negotiations are continuing at the TUC”. By law Unite must give BA at least a  week’s notice before commencing any strike action, and the union has also pledged not to strike over the Easter period, which falls on April 2-5.

I fly to travel to destinations, collecting miles is secondary. While it is still uncertain when the strike days may, or may not, occur I will continue to avoid BA and will book with other airlines to ensure I can get where I need to be. Double or triple miles is not going to stop be booking elsewhere. I have already taken one non-BA flight and have another booked where I would normally choose BA.

Even the vague promise of no strikes over Easter is not completely helpful because it is unclear as to what is meant by Easter. That could be referring to the school holiday Easter period, just the four days 2nd to 5th April or something else.

Just about to go gold again and 6 longhaul F(revenue) or CW sectors booked over next 6 weeks.

No email for me; clearly I don't matter.

VK could you put in a good word for me?

I would have thought that an early announcement of the next seat sale across all cabins would be more likely to attract custom in this period and into the summer! Miles are nice but so difficult to get rid of with BA these days!
