The Met Office says that ash from Iceland’s latest volcanic explosion is expected to reach parts of the UK by Tuesday morning, although it’s not yet clear whether flights will be affected.
The Grimsvotn volcano erupted on Saturday, and has already caused cancellations and delays to domestic and international flights in and out of Iceland’s airports.
The ash cloud is predicted to reach Scotland and Ireland on Tuesday morning, although changeable weather conditions and what is believed to be larger ash particles (which as a result will fall to the ground more quickly), mean the effect on European air traffic is not yet clear.
Last year the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano caused the widespread closure of airspace across Europe, leading to airlines footing the bill for compensations claims by stranded passengers.
