Air Berlin hails XL seat success

5 Feb 2016 by BusinessTraveller

Air Berlin says it has seen “very positive results” from the introduction of XL seats on its long-haul A330 aircraft.

The carrier launched the new offering last year (see news September 2, 2015), with 48 extra legroom seats being added to each of its 14 A330-200 aircraft.

Air Berlin says that average occupancy for the new seats is “over 80 per cent”, and that they are now the number one fee-based ancillary service offered by the carrier.

The XL seats offer 20 per cent extra legroom, with a seat pitch of “around 91cm”.

Commenting on the success of the seat, CCO Julio Rodriguez said:

“Whilst other airlines rely on premium economy, Airberlin's decision to offer XL seats in economy class at a relatively affordable price was absolutely right.

“The XL seats are very popular with our passengers, especially on long-haul tourist routes, and already have an average occupancy rate of over 80 percent.

Passengers can upgrade to XL seats for €79.99 per single journey, and until February 12 the carrier is offering a €10 discount, for travel up to and including April 30.

Members of Air Berlin's Topbonus frequent flyer programme can use miles to upgrade to an XL seat, and Gold and Platinum members travelling in economy may book XL seats free of charge when purchasing tickets in FlyClassic and FlyFlex fare categories.
