Aer Arann will operate flights from Waterford and Galway to the Essex airport from March 27.

The regional carrier will become the first Irish commercial airline to use London Southend airport, which is located close to Rochford train station with links to London Liverpool Street. The airport is due to gain its own station next month, which will also run direct to Liverpool St, and which the airport says will offer a ten-minute plane-to-train transfer for passengers with cabin luggage only.

Aer Arann will offer twice-daily (morning and evening) direct flights between Waterford and London Southend, along with four direct flights per week from Galway, and three further flights per week from Galway operating via Waterford.

The carrier will also continue to fly from London Luton to Galway and Waterford, although the service will be revised from twice-daily down to four flights per week. See below for the full schedules to both Luton and Southend.

London Southend airport is undergoing an expansion programme with a view to being a “fully functional regional airport by 2012”. Plans include the new rail station, a runway extension, and a new terminal building due to open in October. The airport says it predicts passenger growth to two million passengers by 2020.
