Aegean to join Star Alliance

Greek carrier Aegean Airlines is to join Star Alliance, with the integration process expected to take around twelve months.
The airline plies 23 routes within Greece, as well as a further 24 international destinations including London Stansted (for a review of the Aegean Airlines offering on this route, click here).
Jaan Albrecht, CEO Star Alliance said: “Aegean Airlines is a welcome addition to the Star Alliance network. Its home market Greece is of strategic importance due to its geographic position in the Eastern Mediterranean, acting as the main south-eastern access point into the European Union. Through the Aegean Airlines’ network, our customers will in future gain access to numerous destinations in Greece as well as have more choice on routes within Europe.”
Star Alliance currently counts 21 carriers within its alliance, with a further five confirmed as future members (Aegean, Air India, Brussels Airlines, Continental Airlines and TAM).
It’s been a busy day for alliance developments, with Oneworld announcing that Russian carrier S7 Airlines will join its group next year – see online news May 26.
