Aegean launches new London and Paris routes

Aegean Airlines has added new flights and frequencies to London Heathrow and Paris CDG, having taken over slots from fellow Greek carrier Olympic Air.

In an announcement last week, Aegean said it had bought four slots at Heathrow and Paris CDG to be either used or leased to another airline, or sold again.

But Aegean appears to have chosen to use the slots, saying today (March 14) that it was launching a new direct daily service from Larnaca, Cyprus to London Heathrow on March 27, as well as upping its frequencies between Heathrow and Athens from two to four times daily.

A new thrice-weekly Thessaloniki–Paris flight will also commence as part of Aegean’s summer schedule, while the existing Athens-Paris service will go from once- to three-times daily.

All new flights will be operated by brand new two-class Airbus A320s and A321s, with 168 and 195 seats respectively.

Olympic Air, following its failed attempt to merge operations with Aegean Airlines, has dropped a number of international routes including Paris, London Heathrow and London Gatwick (see online news March 4).

The airline said it would instead focus on southeast European destinations, and is due to commence new routes to Belgrade, Corfu, Heraklion, Chania, Mytilene and Rhodes from March 27.
