AA reveals A321 transcontinental seating

24 Jul 2012 by BusinessTraveller
American Airlines has announced plans to fit forthcoming transcontinental Airbus A321 aircraft with a three-class offering, including fully-flat business and first class seats, and Main Cabin Extra seating on all aircraft. The new aircraft will serve routes including flights from New York JFK to San Francisco and Los Angeles, replacing existing B767-200s, with the carrier planning to take delivery from November 2013. AA says it plans to be “the only airline to offer a three-class service and the first to offer fully lie-flat first and business class seats on transcontinental flights”. The cabins have been designed in partnership with JPA, which also designed the cabins for AA’s forthcoming B777-300ER aircraft (see online news May 24). The first class cabin will be fitted with ten Sicma-designed fully-flat seats in a 1-1 configuration, with features including “a large tray table and work surface and an individual storage unit for stowing personal items”. Business class seats will also be fully flat, with 20 BE-designed seats configured in a 2-2 layout, while the Main Cabin (economy) will offer seats designed by Recaro in a 3-3 layout, including 36 Main Cabin Extra seats offering extra leg room. Other cabin features will include:
  • wifi internet access through the aircraft
  • individual 110-volt universal AC power outlets and USB jacks at every seat
  • 8.9-inch HD-capable touchscreen monitors in economy
  • 15.4-inch screens in business and first class offering free access to up to 75 movies, 150 TV programmes, 350 audio chooices and 15 games
  • seat-to-seat chat, live text news and weather updates, 3-D moving maps, airport maps, connecting gate information
