AA cancels Brussels-Chicago route

American Airlines has confirmed it is to cease flights between Brussels and Chicago from November, blaming “high oil prices and the weakened global economy”.
The last eastbound flight will operate on November 6, with the last westbound service on November 7. Fellow Oneworld carriers and transatlantic joint venture partners BA and Iberia codeshare on this route, and the move will leave the alliance without a direct, nonstop connection between the two cities.
In a statement the carrier said:
“American Airlines has today announced that it will cancel its Brussels (BRU)-Chicago (ORD) service, effective 7th November.
“The airline has taken the difficult decision to cancel the route in light of high oil prices and the weakened global economy, which has affected travel demand and the route’s performance.
“Employees have been informed of the decision and the airline will be discussing the potential impact of the cancellation and all available options with those affected.
“The cancellation of American’s Brussels to Chicago service is regrettable but the U.S carrier will continue to serve the Belgian market via its daily year-round nonstop service to New York JFK, as well as in conjunction with Oneworld partners British Airways and Iberia.”
Rival US carrier United Airlines currently serves the Brussels-Chicago route six-times weekly, with merger partner Continental and fellow Star Alliance carrier Brussels Airlines codesharing on the route.
