American Airlines announces widebody revamp

10 May 2012 by BusinessTraveller
American Airlines has announced a revamp of its widebody aircraft, including the fitting of its new fully-flat business class seat on existing B767-300ER and B777-200ER aircraft. The carrier recently announced the launch of its first fully-flat product on forthcoming B777-300ER aircraft (see online news January 27), the first of which is due to be delivered later this year. AA now says that its entire fleet of B777-200ER aircraft will also get the fully-flat seat from 2014, along with wifi capabilities on international routes, and its recently-launched Main Cabin Extra product (see online news March 2). These aircraft - which currently serve mid- to long-haul international markets in Europe, Asia and South America – will be redesigned in a two-class layout “to better match capacity and demand”, with the first class cabin removed. The aircraft will offer up to 45 fully-flat seats, which the carrier says will offer “up to two times more living space than American’s current 777-200ER business class seat”. Features include direct aisle access for all passengers, AVOD IFE systems, universal power outlets, USB jacks, wifi internet access and “a business class walk-up bar stocked with snacks and refreshments”. Up to half of the carrier’s B767-300ER aircraft will also be refitted (the rest being retired “over time”). There will be up to 28 business class seats with aisle access, and passengers will be offered Samsung Galaxy Tab devices on which to watch the IFE offering (for more information see online news December 15, 2011). The Main Cabin Extra product will also be fitted to these aircraft. AA says the revamp is expected to begin in early 2014, and adds it is “currently working to determine the installation timeline and will have more details on anticipated completion dates in the future”. The carrier has a total of ten new B777-300ER aircraft on order, due for delivery during 2012 and 2013. These will feature a first class product, with London expected to be one of the launch routes for the new aircraft. For more information visit aa.com. Report by Mark Caswell
