You’ll be able to enjoy a meal on a plane without ever leaving the ground when the historic TWA terminal at Kennedy International airport reopens as a hotel.

Scheduled to open in late 2018 or early 2019, the TWA Flight Centre Hotel will feature two new hotel towers with 505 rooms flanking the space-age, Eero Saarinen-designed TWA terminal building, which opened in 1962, Curbed New York reported. New glass curtain walls will help shield rooms from airport noise. Room rates will start around US$250 per night.

The historic terminal building will be transformed into a revamped lobby with restaurants, a nightclub (in the former Constellation Club lounge space) and numerous other facilities. It will retain the building’s original design elements, notably the signature red carpeting found throughout the terminal building (matching the logo of the now-defunct Trans World Airlines).

Plans also call for a restaurant and bar to be built inside the fuselage of a restored Lockheed Super Constellation, a four-engine, prop-driven passenger aircraft that was the backbone of the TWA fleet during the 1950s and 1960s. The hotel will also have 3,700 sqm of meeting space and a 930 sqm observation deck.

The US$265-million project is led by MCR Development, which also redeveloped New York’s former General Theological Seminary building into the High Line Hotel. The TWA terminal has been vacant for more than 15 years.
