Flybe says it will offer up to four daily “rescue flights” between Cardiff and London City during the six-week closure of the Severn Tunnel later this year.

The tunnel is to close for rail electrification works between September 12 and October 21, meaning rail travellers will be diverted via Gloucester or onto rail replacement bus services.

Flybe says it “has stepped in quickly” to offer up to four daily flights on weekdays and two on weekends between the Welsh and English capitals.

The 50-minute flights will depart Cardiff at 0600 (0610 on Fridays), 0925, 1400 and 1850 Monday to Friday, and from London City at 0720 (0730 on Fridays), 1045, 1520 and 2010.

On Saturdays services will leave Cardiff at 0750 and 1050, and from LCY at 0910 and 1210, while on Sundays flights will depart Cardiff at 1400 and 1740, and from LCY at 1520 and 1900.

The carrier has produced an infographic comparing flight, rail and car journey times between Wales’ Millennium Centre and The Gherkin in London during the Severn Tunnel closure.
