United Airlines will serve free snacks in economy class on flights within North and Latin America from February.
Passengers on flights departing before 0945 will receive a Dutch stroopwafel, a caramel-filled waffle, and coffee/tea.
Those on flights taking-off after 0945 will receive packaged savoury snacks — a mix of rice crackers, sesame sticks and wasabi peas, or a mix of mini pretzel sticks, Cajun corn sticks and ranch soy nuts.
The US carrier eliminated the economy class offering in 2008 as part of cost-saving measures.
Last month, United announced it will serve Illy coffee to passengers on board and in its lounges worldwide from next summer (see news, November 20).
Jimmy Samartzis, United's vice president of food services and United Clubs, said: "We're refocusing on the big and little things that we know matter to our customers and shape how they feel about their travel experience.
"We're bringing back complimentary snacks that are a nod to our global presence. They also add that extra level of service our employees will be proud to deliver and will make a big difference for our customers."
United's Choice Menu items will still be available to purchase on select flights, as before.
