Cityjet to upgrade London City fleet

15 Oct 2015 by GrahamSmith

Cityjet will replace its ageing fleet of Avro RJ85 aircraft with 15 Superjet SSJ100s, it has been announced.

The regional carrier will take delivery of four of the new SSJ100s next year, with a further 11 due in 2017.

The new aircraft will operate Cityjet's London City airport hub network.

The SSJ100 contains 98 seats and is the first aircraft in its class to offer five abreast seating with a 32-inch seat pitch. It is claimed that the cabin height of more than two metres means the SSJ100 offers more cabin and overhead bin space than competitors.

Cityjet is the first European airline to order the SSJ100, which is built by Superjet International, a joint venture between Russia's Sukhoi corporation and Italy's Alenia Aermacchi.

Pat Byrne, Cityjet's executive chairman, said: "We are very excited to be the very first airline in Europe to order this 'game-changing' aircraft that delivers a level of comfort, plush interior design and cabin capacity that is far superior to all of its competitors.

"This is a very versatile new generation jet which will fulfil our requirements with a capability to operate at smaller airports such as our hub at London City airport and offer significant advantages in fuel efficiency, emissions ratings and noise reduction."

He added: "We intend introducing the SSJ100 on charter activity in 2016 and will place it on our London City route network in 2017."

Cityjet has options for an additional ten aircraft.

Two weeks ago, Cityjet struck a deal with SAS to operate and crew eight aircraft for the Scandinavian carrier and buy its regional Blue 1 airline (see news, October 1).
