The Arts Club to add in-house hotel

23 Jan 2014 by GrahamSmith

One of London's most exclusive private members' clubs is to add 16 hotel rooms and suites to the upper floors of its Mayfair townhouse.

The Arts Club, which dates back to 1863 and was co-founded by Charles Dickens, has three restaurants, a basement nightclub, a Tuscan courtyard garden with a heated smoking lounge and various drawing rooms for coffee meetings and socialising.

It has now announced that design agency Sagrada will, by the end of the year, transform what was once office space into rooms for both members and non-members, although its 4,000 members will have priority when it comes to booking.

The rooms will be located on the second, third and fourth floors of the Georgian building and will "evoke the style of Europe in the early 20th century".

The interiors, which will range in size up to 100 sqm for the largest suite, will feature furnishings from designers including Jacques Adnet, Gio Ponti, Finn Juhl, Piero Fornasetti and Hans Wegner.

Finishing will include rattlesnake leather headboards, eglomise mirror panels, polished brass, chevron parquet flooring and hand-tufted rugs, while bathrooms will have custom toiletries, walnut doors and marble surfaces.

The colour palette will be of soft gold, cream and white, picked out with rich yellow, turquoise and blue.

David d'Almada, director of Sagrada, said that every room will be styled differently, and will include original curated artworks from the club's collection, as well as beautiful objects in a range of textures and luxury materials.

Alice Chadwyck-Healey, executive director of the Arts Club, said: "Many of our members have asked us to expand our offering so we expect plenty of demand to stay. We believe that the new hotel will attract a very international guest, who wishes to relax in a high-quality, glamorous and discreet suite in central London."

The Arts Club, which moved from its original Hanover Square location to nearby Dover Street in 1896, and was given an extensive revamp in 2011, is dedicated to those who both work in the arts and have related philanthropic interests.

Membership costs £1,500 a year and there is a £2,000 joining fee.
