ANA and Garuda announce new codeshare deal

20 Dec 2013 by ReggieHo

ANA and Garuda Indonesia have entered into a new codeshare partnership for flights between Japan and Indonesia.

ANA passengers arriving in Jakarta will be able to reach up 10 Indonesian destinations such as Yogyakarta and Denpasar on codeshare flights operated by Garuda. Passengers on Garuda arriving at Haneda, Narita or Kansai airport, on the other hand, will be able to make onward connections to 11 Japanese cities such as Chitose and Nagoya using codeshare flights operated by ANA.

The two airlines are also in discussion for a joint mileage programme, but details have not been revealed.

Both will launch new services between Tokyo Haneda and Jakarta Soekarno Hatta, with ANA set to start on March 30, 2014 and the Indonesian flag carrier sometime in the first half of 2014.

The new services will increase the number of weekly flights operated by the two carriers between Japan and Indonesia to a total of 53 — 14 by ANA and 39 Garuda.

The new flights highlight the rising status of Haneda since its expansion (see story) in late 1980s. Narita airport, which is the larger facility, has been restrained by a curfew barring planes from landing and takeoff between 11pm and 6am to minimise the effects of noise on local residents. Haneda was briefly made a domestic airport after Narita opened in 1978 as Tokyo’s main air hub, but it was allowed to handle international flights again in 2010 as air travel demand to the Japanese capital soared.

Haneda is preferred by many travellers for its proximity to the city centre.
