Guests staying at the pentahotels in Shanghai and Beijing can now get free use of bikes to explore the surrounding area.

As part of their pentafun program, the hotels will provide guests with red bikes, helmets, and a special map showing sights in the surrounding area, all free of charge.

The hotel group said the scheme aimed to give guests a “more intimate experience” of the area around the hotels. It said that bikes offered a good way to get around the centre of Chinese cities, particularly in Shanghai and Beijing where there are still a lot of old alleyways and courtyard residences that cannot be reached by car.

Asked about safety, a hotel spokesperson said both cities were well suited to cycling and the hotels helped to ensure people were safe.

“Shanghai and Beijing have a long-standing bike culture,” the spokesperson said. “As added measures, helmets are provided, guests are required to sign a waiver form and they must understand how to use the bike safely.”

Hotel staff would be more than happy to introduce guests to possible routes with less traffic and give them advice on road conditions, the spokesperson added.
