Security checks at Helsinki Airport revamped

24 Apr 2012

Finavia, which operates 25 airports across Finland, is testing its newly designed security checking system for Helsinki Airport. The pilot line, recently installed in Terminal 1, aims to streamline the boarding process.

When implemented, security procedures are expected to take from five to ten minutes, enhancing Helsinki Airport’s position as an efficient transit hub for connections between Europe and Asia-Pacific.

The security check includes clear signage that reduces confusion amongst passengers about directions and what needs to be taken out and put on the conveyor belt, as well as a new mobile solution that will update passengers on the current security wait times. Specialised sensors are installed near the security checkpoint to pick up on passengers' Bluetooth signals, indicating how many people there might be in line at any given time and updating the estimated wait time to a dedicated mobile website. The technology does not compromise the passengers' personal numbers.

According to Finavia’s website, about 12 million international passengers passed through Helsinki Airport in 2011. In order to enhance the passenger experience further, the airport has also installed electronic border control kiosks that reduce the time spent at immigration (see story here). Though the technology is currently only available for European Union passport holders, it will eventually expand to include international citizens. The project complements the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 initiative, awarded by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design to Finland's capital, allowing it to showcase achievements in innovative design.
