Air New Zealand to drop Beijing flights

28 Mar 2012 by BusinessTraveller

Air New Zealand is to drop flights from Auckland to Beijing at the end of June, with the aim of moving to a daily service to Shanghai by next year.

The carrier currently flies twice-weekly to the Chinese capital, but this route will cease on June 30, although a one-stop codeshare service will be offered from Beijing with Star Alliance member Air China.

Flights to the financial centre of Shanghai will increase from four to to five times-weekly, with plans to increase this to daily by next year.

Local media reports the carrier as stating that it will "focus our marketing and sales resources on the Shanghai region of around 14 million people as we seek to provide customers a daily service to and from this important gateway in China".

Earlier this year the New Zealand Herald reported that the flag carrier had no plans to drop flights to London, despite losing as much as NZ$1 million per week on its long-haul services (see online news January 25).
