Movenpick Hotels & Resorts enters the Philippines through a reflagging of the former Hilton Cebu Resort and Spa on Mactan Island.
Hilton operated the country’s first internationally branded hotel in the mid-1960s, but pulled out of the country in 1988. It made a comeback 17 years later in October 2005, managing the 246-room resort.
Hilton Worldwide and the owner Oikonomos International Resources, however, decided to end management agreement recently, saying the agreement was “mutually agreed upon and allows both parties to explore new opportunities independently”.
Movenpick, which has Swiss roots, has had a small presence in Asia until 2006, with the meetings-oriented Movenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket, launching on the resort island which was still emerging from effects of a devastating tsunami. Movenpick Hotel Saigon and Movenpick Hotel Hanoi expanded the portfolio in 2008. For more news on the chain's growth, click here and here.
