Aerolineas Argentinas to join Skyteam

19 Oct 2010 by BusinessTraveller

The alliance says the Argentine carrier will sign an agreement “by the end of October”, and is expected to join in 2012.

Aerolineas Argentinas will be the first South American carrier within Skyteam – latin American airline AeroMexico is also a member.

Skyteam said that the Argentine carrier introduced a five-year restructuring plan last year, with measures including fleet renewal and rationalization, the adding of key international destinations, increasing the density of the domestic and regional network, and improving product quality and consistency.

Aerolineas Argentinas flies to 34 domestic destinations, and 18 cities in the Americas, Europe and the South Pacific. The carrier flies direct to Buenos Aires from Madrid, Rome and Barcelona.

Skyteam welcomed Vietnam Airlines and Tarom as new members earlier this year, and China Eastern and China Airlines are due to join the group in 2011.
