Construction for Malaysia’s new low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) has begun, a response to rapidly increasing traffic in the sector.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport Two (KLIA2), designed to accommodate 30 million passengers annually, will cost an estimated MYR997million (US$316 million). It expected to be completed in April 2012.
The existing budget terminal can now only take up to 15 million passengers annually and lacks parking bays.
KLIA2 will be located 2km from the main terminal building and will feature easy inter-terminal transfer services and several transport links into the city, including taxis, buses and the Express Rail Link (ERL) service. It will comprise 96 boarding gates with 72 of them dedicated to international flights.
Aggressive low-cost airline, AirAsia, has been eager to build its own facility but in another location. The request has been denied by the Malaysian government.
