Look and book for Shanghai Expo

25 Feb 2010

World Expo 2010 Shanghai organisers have set up Expotia (english.expotia.com), the official hotel booking website to answer the accommodation needs of visitors attending the mega event.

City officials are optimistic that around 70 million people will visit the Expo site. This is more than the record set by the Osaka Expo in 1970, which attracted 64 million visitors.

As the Shanghai Expo takes place over a six-month period, from May 1 to October 31, getting a room will not pose as much of an issue as compared with an event such as the Olympic Games which are held in a shorter time frame. In the past two years, all the major international chains have been establishing presence with many brands from their portfolios. A number of boutique types has also sprung up. Even the historic Peace Hotel, now under the aegis of Fairmont Hotels, will finally be opening in April completely transformed.

Hoteliers, however, warn that the city will fill up in the week leading to the opening on May 1 and last throughout the whole month to early June. As one sales director told Business Traveller: “There will be lots of delegations coming and hosting of corporate activities.”

It will be the same situation in October when the Expo winds up on the last day of the month.

An inventory of 502 hotels of all categories – from branded ones to independent ones, big and small and also including hotels in nearby cities such as Suzhou, Hangzhou and Kunshan – can be found on Expotia, along with useful Expo information and touring possibilities.
