Emirates to open Birmingham lounge

9 Sep 2009 by Mark Caswell

Emirates is to open a new lounge at Birmingham International airport (BIA) later this year, joining the carrier’s existing lounges at Gatwick and Heathrow, along with the forthcoming Manchester facility.

The £1.3 million, 7,000 sqft lounge was announced to mark the opening of BIA’s new international pier today, which in turn forms part of the airport’s 70th anniversary celebrations. Emirates also took the opportunity to show off its A380 aircraft to Birmingham-based passengers, with its flight EK39 (which was scheduled to land at 1235) being plied with the superjumbo rather than the usual B777-300.

The new lounge will be located close to the airline’s departure gate at Terminal 1, and will include seating for 107 passengers, shower facilities, hot and cold food and beverages, a business centre with workstations, and complimentary wifi internet access.

There is no specific date for the unveiling of the lounge as yet, with Emirates saying it will open “this winter”. Before this though the airline will unveil it latest lounge at Manchester airport next month (see online news April 16 for more information).
