New Zealand to assist Trans-Tasman trips

21 Aug 2009

New Zealand is to introduce a fast clearance system for Australian and New Zealand travellers arriving in the country.

The proposals include "SmartGate processing" in New Zealand airports, which involves a kiosk and gate system that allows passengers with e-passports to process themselves at passport control.

The system will be introduced at Auckland International Airport for arrivals in December. Wellington and Christchurch will follow by mid-2010.

The measures also involve changes to biosecurity screening. Passengers from New Zealand or Australia identified as low-risk will be able to exit through a new express arrivals lane.

Under the proposals, Australian passengers leaving Australia for New Zealand would not pay the AU$47 (US$39.10) passenger movement charge and both countries would recognise each other's security, immigration and quarantine checks.
