CHECK IN: Six new beach resorts in Asia-Pacific

Alila Villas Hadahaa

Opening when? Mid-August 2009.

Where is it? The first resort to be located in Gaafu Alifu (North Huvadhoo) Atoll in the previously uninhabited southern Maldives.

Fast facts: This boutique property boasts 14 stilted over-the-water Aqua Villas and 36 Island Villas, 20 of which include a private plunge pool. It also features a dive and water sports centre, Mandara Spa, a gym and yoga centre, a Maldivian-style restaurant, a poolside and cigar bar, a library with a stargazing roof and a central lagoon plunging 90m down.


Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort Pattaya


Opened when? Soft launched in July 2009.

Where is it? Located along Wong Amat Beach and Naklua Beach, North Pattaya, Thailand.

Fast facts: Following the "Lost World" theme, the resort features 555 sea-facing guestrooms, specialty restaurants and bars, a spa and a convention centre with a ballroom accommodating up to 1,200 people. It enjoys direct access to a 230m stretch of white sand beach and boasts a water park with swimming pools, waterfalls and other aquatic facilities.


Outrigger Serenity Terraces Resort

Opened when? April 2009.

Where is it? Located on Chalong Bay along the southeast coast of Phuket island.

Fast facts: It comprises 78 one- and two-bedroom apartments, several penthouses, each with a rooftop terrace and sun deck, and some featuring their own lap pool. Other facilities include a beachfront restaurant and bar, spa, sports gym, infinity swimming pool and private barbecue areas. Wireless connectivity is available throughout the resort. The resort also owns a 28m twin-mast sailing yacht, Lady Anita as well as a speed boat, catamarans and kayaks.


Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa


Opened when? March 2009

Where is it? Located in the northern part of Boracay Island in the Philippines, the resort is accessible by a 45-minute domestic flight from Manila and, a further 15-minute combined land and sea transfer time between the Caticlan Airport and the resort.

(At press time, Caticlan Airport was closed due to three incidents involving the runway. The only airline currently allowed to land there is SEA Air. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific, which also serve the airport, now land in Kalibo City, two hours from Caticlan and offer free shuttle transfers to the area.)

Fast facts: The 219-guestroom resort includes 36 villas and suites with private lap pool, outdoor shower, a pergola for outdoor dining, and a day bed for relaxing or massage. Other features include a hilltop Italian restaurant, cliffside seafood restaurant, bar, the CHI spa in a 6,000sqm spa village, a marine centre and banqueting facilities among others.


Mandarin Oriental, Sanya

Opened when? January 2009

Where is it? Situated on the eastern end of the Coral Bay near Dadonghai Bay in Hainan, China’s southernmost island province.

Fast facts: The resort offers 297 guestrooms including villas, suites, pavilions and deluxe rooms. Some of the guestrooms will feature private infinity edge pools, gazebos, plunge pools and direct access to the coral beach among others. Other facilities include 11 restaurants and bars, a spa village with treatment suites and gardens, a large recreation centre with children’s’ facilities and over 3,800sqm of indoor/outdoor conference and banqueting space among others.


Mercure Samui Buri Resort

Opened when?  January 2009

Where is it?  Located on Maenam Beach in Koh Samui, a southern Thailand island, 25 minutes away from Samui Airport.

Fast facts: The resort consists of 56 deluxe rooms with ocean or swimming pool view, or an outdoor terrace with sun lounge and direct access to the pool as well as 29 private pool villas. Other facilities in its leisure inventory include a spa, fitness centre, restaurant, two bars, conferencing rooms that can accommodate up to 100 persons and banquet facilities among others.
