Air India to launch low-cost domestic carrier

15 Jul 2009

Air India has decided to turn its Air India Express subsidiary into a domestic budget airline from September.

Currently flights under the existing brand of Air India Express fly internationally.

Air India has been the only major Indian full-service airline without a low-cost unit. Jet and Kingfisher both have low-cost carriers within their stables.

The move will mean a major overhaul of Air India’s online booking engine, which is recognised as a key component of any low-cost strategy. Changes are also expected to Air India’s frequent flyer programme.
