Hongkong Airlines eyes inflight communications services by 2010

24 Jun 2009 by intern11

Hongkong Airlines has signed a deal with OnAir to provide mobile and internet communication services on 10 of its new twin-aisle Airbus A330 aircraft from November 2010.

Passengers will be able to communicate using their own mobile and smart phones, as well as access the internet via OnAir’s Mobile OnAir and Internet OnAir services.

The communications-enabled aircraft will be deployed on routes in Southeast Asia, China and North America.

“This latest technology from OnAir helps us further differentiate our service, and enables our customers to stay in touch with colleagues, family and friends while they travel,” said Hongkong Airlines president Yang Jianhong.

Upon implementation, it will be the third Asian carrier to offer OnAir’s services onboard, behind AirAsia and Shenzhen Airlines. AirAsia has mobile services on its Airbus A320s, and its long-haul arm, AirAsia X, has mobile services on its A330s and internet services on its A320s. In addition, Shenzhen Airlines runs OnAir’s mobile service on its A320s.

OnAir also provides mobile and internet services for 12 other airlines in the Middle East and Europe including British Airways, Royal Jordanian Airlines and Qatar Airways.
