Indian travel agents step up commission protest

10 Apr 2009

A large number of travel agents in India have collectively renounced their ability to sell Singapore Airlines and SilkAir tickets.

Over 900 agents have returned their Letters of Capping, the letter of authority that allows an agent to issue a ticket, to their association offices.

Associations are expected to surrender these letters to SIA and SilkAir offices all over India over the next few days.

Travel Agents’ Association of India (TAAI) president, Rajinder Rai, said: “Our stance against SIA has only toughened and will continue to remain so until SIA revokes its position.”

This follows an announcement by travel agents associations in India that about 5,000 travel agents will go on hunger strike if the issue is not resolved.
