HK exhibition visitors in for value-added perks

28 Mar 2009

Visitors attending trade shows and exhibitions in Hongkong can expect a number of perks.

Until June 30, exhibitors, registered buyers and their companions are eligible for exclusive airfares that are 5 to 20 percent lower than prevailing market rates when flying on Cathay Pacific or Dragonair. These apply to 40 destinations in 20 countries.

The catch, however, is that only delegates of 28 participating exhibitions, listed by the Meetings and Exhibitions Hongkong (MEHK), can avail of the offers. These include Hongkong Gifts and Premium Fairs, Hongkong Houseware Fair, Retail Asia Expo & Congress and Asia International Arts & Antiques Fair among others.

The initiative is part of the “Business Right Here” campaign launched recently by MEHK, the business-events-focused arm of the Hongkong Tourism Board.

“This is an industry effort to encourage exhibition delegates to fly and not scale back on their travel,” said Gilly Wong, MEHK general manager for MICE and cruise, adding that the campaign aims to entice over 240,000 exhibition attendees by the first half of the year.

The exhibition sector contributes about 1.5 percent to Hongkong’s GDP.

While MEHK expects that the slide in the number of visitors will continue with the global economic crisis, the campaign attempts to restrict the negative growth percentage to a single digit.

Other perks under the “Business Right Here” banner includes reduced prices and value-added services from 38 hotels throughout the city. Some of these benefits are free room upgrades, free internet access and complimentary shuttle service between the hotel and exhibition venue. Participating properties include Grand Hyatt Hongkong, Excelsior Hotel and the Regal Hotel Group.

MEHK has also teamed up with Hongkong’s major attractions such as the Hongkong Jockey Club, Ngong Ping 360 and Ocean Park Hongkong to allow participants to enter at a discount.
