Deck the trays with Christmas goodies

22 Dec 2008

Knowing a number of travellers may be caught commuting during the holiday season, some airlines have thoughtfully prepared dinners in the air with a touch of the festive.

From December 22 to 26, British Airways (BA) is serving traditional turkey with all the trimmings as well as a Christmas cake and a rich chocolate log.

The Christmas cake from the Ogmore Vale Bakery in South Wales is a recipe from the 1930s, which has been passed down through three generations of the same family that is still hand making the delectable fruit mixture with nuts and spices. This is then baked and topped with marzipan and icing and presented to customers in World Traveller and World Traveller Plus.

The chocolate log is for passengers in Club World. Hand-made in three parts and then carefully assembled, the treat comes with a festive cranberry compote. BA expects to serve at least 38,000 Christmas meals in the air over the holiday period.

Air France is choosing to spread cheer through chocolates and champagne from December 24 to 31 on its long-haul flights from Paris-CDG. Passengers in La Premiere class will receive a box of four chocolates by Lenotre; those in Espace Affaires will receive a box of six squares by Valrhona; and those in Tempo will enjoy Lindor chocolates. On medium-haul flights to Europe, Valrhona and Lindt dark and milk chocolates are the treats and in the La Premiere lounge at the Paris-CDG, boxes of Cluizel chocolates will be handed out.

Expect the bubbly to flow as usual, irrespective of cabin class and on all routes including to and from Asia. Air France is one of the very few airlines that offers champagne to Economy Class patrons.

On selected Singapore Airlines (SIA) flights on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, roast turkey with chestnut stuffing and cranberry sauce and a log cake star on the menu with Suites and First Class customers getting extras such as pumpkin soup with sautéed mushrooms and crème fraiche and warm Christmas pudding with ice-cream.

As for Cathay Pacific, a special Christmas log cake and cookies will be distributed in all cabin classes on December 24, 25 and 26.

Bon apetit!
