SAS is launching a hand baggage-only fare on routes within Europe next month.
The airline described the new SAS Go Light fare as a "supplementary low-cost offering" that is in addition to the existing SAS Go (economy) and SAS Plus (premium economy) products.
SAS Go Light passengers can rebook tickets within 24 hours, select seats 22 hours before departure, and will receive tea and coffee on board.
The fare will be €14 (£9.85) cheaper than a SAS Go ticket and passengers can add check-in luggage for €25 (£17.60).
Silver, gold and diamond members of SAS' Eurobonus loyalty scheme will be able to check-in bags at no extra cost.
SAS Go Light will rolled-out from September 8, and will initially be tested on routes between Scandinavia and Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain. It will not be available on routes within Scandinavia.
Stephanie Smitt Lindberg, SAS vice president of customer journey and loyalty, said: "We're seeing significant demand from today's travellers for a more scaled-down alternative and lower price ticket.
"That's why we've decided to launch SAS Go Light - a low-cost concept that is aimed at those who want to travel without checked luggage.
"As both SAS Go and SAS Plus will remain unchanged, our product range is set to become even wider, making it easier for our customers to choose the option that best matches their travel needs."
Last week, Easyjet dropped its guaranteed cabin baggage policy (see news, August 12). And last month British Airways reduced the size of carry-on baggage permitted on board its flights (see news, July 29) and halved the free checked baggage allowance for World Traveller passengers with fully-flexible tickets (see news, July 30).
